The items that each child is expected to bring to class for a new school year can be quite intimidating to parents on low or fixed incomes. But these supplies are necessary for their children to be successful as students. Similarly, what a child must be prepared for when encountering the world can be just as daunting. However, having a supply in Jesus is absolutely necessary for these kids to be a success in life.
We are so happy that in 2007 we began partnering with parents in the community to provide their children with the basic items to begin the school year. Families who have a need call the church and reserve a bookbag for their children. Prior to school starting, these kids and parents are invited to the church for an exciting service full of games, songs, door prizes, and most importantly the Word of God. After the service is over, these kids leave with a new backpack full of new supplies to help them start their school year.
The range of emotions that we have seen ranged from a child’s smile that extended from ear to ear, to that of a thankful parent in tears because they didn’t know how they were going to prepare their child for school. Whatever the case, they have seen that Jesus truly does love the little children.
