It began with a simple thought: how much we as believers enjoy the holidays and the time of family, fellowship, and food that they bring. With that in mind, we began thinking about those who wouldn’t be able to enjoy a family meal, because they had no family or they did not have the food. That’s when the SOTC decided to make it their mission to help families in the area be able to celebrate the holidays with a wonderful meal, while telling these families of the goodness of Christ.
The first year was in 2004. 100 families were invited to the church. Bro. Harold led the praise team in song, and Brother Stewart delivered from the Word about what is most important; a relationship with Christ. After receiving spiritual nourishment, each family left with a box containing the basic items to prepare a Thanksgiving meal, complete with the turkey.
We give God the glory for the testimonies that we have received through this outreach. One lady who spoke with the pastor, said that had she not received her items, that her family would have eaten bacon & eggs for Thanksgiving.
The boxes have grown to contain all the basic items needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. These include cans of vegetables, pie crusts, eggs, butter, a bag of potatoes, and a turkey.
The name, “Can Do” drive, stemmed from two things: the canned goods that would be placed in each box, and knowing that we “can do all things through Christ”. Through the combined efforts of the church body in donating to this cause, we have seen the number of families grow each year. It is amazing what God “can do”!
